Myanmar to sign cross-border transport deal with Thailand 5/2/2018

Thailand and Myanmar would soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would facilitate cross-border transportation of goods and people.

The memorandum would lead to the implementation of the 2015 agreement that was signed for cross-border transportation among Mekong region countries.

The agreement will initially allow transport of goods and people from Myanmar to as far as Khon Kaen in Thailand, and from the Thai side to as far as Mawlamyine, he said.

U Aung Ye Tun said basic cross-border facilities are being constructed in Myawaddy, and the Ministry of Construction is upgrading roads and bridges along the trade route.

In addition, MoUs will be signed with China, Laos, and Vietnam for cross-border transportation, and discussions are being carried out with India on an agreement, said U Aung Ye Tun.

A joint task force has been stationed at the border to conduct inspections according to the regulations so that trade of illegal goods and other criminal activities will not occur, according to U Aung Ye Tun.

The agreements that the Mekong MoU is based on already include the rules that must be followed by each nation, he said.

The MOU is expected to boost trade between the two countries.
